" Sleeping on a Bed of Roses"
Recently submitted to National Geographic, this sequence of (never before recorded) hummingbird behavior was captured by Rob Armstrong using a an ultra slow-motion high-definition 4k video camera. Initially, as you will see, the star of our show, a female ruby-throated hummingbird, demonstrates incredible agility, dexterity and flight skill as she successfully masters the technique of balancing on, and even walking on, the fragile and precarious petals of a beautiful rose. After repeatedly performing this feat, she is apparently ready for a rest. So, she decides to settle down for an afternoon nap on the soft top of the very rose she has been feeding on. Note: In the original unedited version of this video, the hummingbird actually dozed off for and extended period of time (several minutes). In order to keep the video short and engaging, we have edited out a long segment when she was perfectly still and apparently fast asleep.
