"The Bible makes it clear, that the purpose of the 10 Commandments as found in the Law of Moses is not to make us righteous, but to show us how unrighteous we really are! God uses the Commandments to expose our sin for what it is (rebellion against God), to reveal our lost and helpless condition, and to demonstrate our desperate need for a Savior.
Romans 3:19-21
"We know that whatever the Law says, it says to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be silenced [so that no one can make any excuses] and so the whole world will be found guilty and held accountable to God. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by obeying the Law [by keeping the 10 Commandments]; rather, through the Law we become conscious and aware of our sin [and how evil it really is]."
God's Word states that no one can be made right with God by obeying the 10 Commandments. In fact, most shockingly, the Bible declares that anyone who relies on keeping the Commandments is under the curse of God's condemnation! This is true because the consequence of breaking any one of the Commandments is eternal damnation! Breaking one of God's Law, just one time, makes you a lawbreaker in His eyes. The Law can never save you [rescue you] from the condemnation that that the Law requires for those who break it!
james 2:10, Galatians 3:10
The good news is that God Himself has provided the Savior we so desperately need. God sent His only Son Jesus Christ into the world to die in our place as our 'substitute sacrifice.' Not only did Jesus pay the full penalty for our sins on the cross, but He offers His perfect divine righteousness to each one of us as a FREE GIFT!!!
The “righteousness” that God gives to those who simply believe in Jesus for their salvation, comes only “from God”. This means that it is not something that we have in ourselves, nor is it something that we can ever hope to produce or achieve. In fact, it is none other than the perfect righteousness of Jesus Himself that God imputes to us (credits to us) the moment we first put our faith in Jesus Christ alone.
The words “faith" and "believe" are synonyms. Both of these words mean to rely on or trust in someone other than yourself. When you rely on what Jesus has already accomplished for you by His death on the cross (and not on your own devotion, effort or good works), God gives you this wonderful gift without cost. His gift to you includes the forgiveness of all your sins and a home with Him in heaven forever! See Romans 4:1-8. 5:6-10, Acts 16:30-31. The apostle Paul, the author of the book of Romans, repeats and re-emphasizes what he said previously, a person is justified (pronounced ‘perfectly and eternally righteous’ by God) through faith in Jesus Christ alone “apart from” trying to obey God’s laws and commandments which were intended to show us our own sinfulness and our need for salvation through Jesus Christ alone.
